So this week we did basic kayaking skills which involved rolling, paddle strokes, edging the boat etc. The first day went really well, we went to the local high school pool and got use to the "Yak" set up. Then it was straight into the rolling! This part came easy for me and i picked it up very fast because i had the awesome Jo Thorne teach me all i know at high school so really the week was a big revising week for me to brush up on some skills and learn some new skills as well. Wednesday saw us going to the pool in the morning for more rolling practice and then heading to the mighty Grey river to experience some moving water and learn how to take "eddy" lines and perform a roll in moving water. Also i learnt a new paddle stroke called a "Stern draw" which i found hard to perfect and still learning to this day. Thursday had another pool session then we went to a grade two river called the Arnold. This river had a few more rocks, white water rapids and proved an enjoying challenge to perfect getting into eddy lines and using the appropriate strokes to perform the movements well. Friday had us going straight to another more funner river called Arahura. This day was to really test our abilities and put all we had learnt into getting down, around, up and under the water with a bit of professionalism. all in all it was an awesome week full of learning, laughing, getting scared and getting WET!

Extra comments - Did more tecnical paddle strokes and more rolling. Went to the Taipo river which was a bit more of a tecnical run were we learnt how to scout out rapids and what to look for when picking a route down. Also Adam rolled in shallow water and dislocated his shoulder. i think he learnt his lesson.
